The Black Ribbon

A Sermon on John 20:1-18


A few years ago, in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, the people in one storefront church were met with a terrible sight on Easter morning. A black ribbon, a sign of sorrow, had been strung across the entrance of the church, preventing anyone from entering. Next to it a sign had been posted, “Due to the sudden death of our beloved founder and pastor, our Easter services are canceled.
